OOGarden Protects Its Prices and Strengthens Account Security With DataDome
OOGarden is an e-commerce site specializing in gardening and landscaping products. Bots were targeting OOGarden to scrape its prices and allow competitors to adjust theirs accordingly. The site was also vulnerable to credential stuffing attacks. Today, DataDome protects OOGarden’s pricing data and blocks malicious login attempts in real time.
The Problem: Bots Steal Prices So Competitors Can Match Them
At a time when marketplaces dominate global e-commerce, OOGarden has chosen to do without them. In order to control the entire value chain and keep control of its data, the gardening and landscaping product specialist is still holding out against Amazon and other giants.
For OOGarden’s product and marketing teams, it was all the more exasperating to observe that the slightest price change on their website was reflected almost instantly on third-party sites.
“Whenever we changed a price on our site, the prices on Google were adapted to ours within minutes,” explains Renaud Causier, Director of Information Systems at OOGarden. “Our partnership with DataDome sprung out of this observation: we wanted to protect our site from scraping of our proprietary data.”
The Solution: DataDome’s AI Instantly Detects Bots
To put an end to the price scraping, OOGarden’s marketing department directly contacted DataDome, which had merits already familiar to a member of the OOGarden team. Implementing the DataDome IIS module, which is compatible with many configurations including OOGarden’s .NET infrastructure, required very few technical modifications.
“The implementation was really simple and fast—just a small configuration in the core, and then adding a tag to the site,” confirms Renaud.
The strength of the DataDome solution lies in the use of artificial intelligence to detect unwanted visitors, even those that employ very sophisticated techniques (such as the use of instrumentation frameworks and residential IP proxies) to impersonate humans.
“The protection works very well, and we can recommend DataDome without hesitation,” says Renaud. “Also, if our SEO team wants to allow or block specific bots, the dashboard is very easy to use.”
The Results: Protected Prices, Secure Customer Accounts
Since the DataDome protection was activated in 2017, price scraping is no longer an issue for OOGarden’s teams. And while it wasn’t the original goal, DataDome has also helped strengthen customer account security.
“For business reasons, we never wanted to use CAPTCHAs on our login pages,” Renaud explains. “Some users have trouble solving them, which generates friction in the account creation process. But as a result, we were vulnerable to credential stuffing.”
Some time after the implementation of DataDome, OOGarden commissioned a security audit. A specialized company was hired to try to crack the site and usurp customer accounts—mission not accomplished.
“Thanks to its artificial intelligence, DataDome instantly spots suspicious requests and blocks illegitimate connection attempts. As a result, the solution has also provided additional account security to our site,” concludes Renaud.
