How Ubaldi.com Reduced Cloud Costs & Saved 20 Engineering Hours Monthly
Ubaldi.com is a leading online retailer in France, with over 100,000 home products, such as TVs, stereos, household appliances, bedding, and more. The website’s login endpoint was targeted by automated credential stuffing, while increasingly sophisticated scrapers harvested prices and product information. With DataDome, Ubaldi.com is protected against scraping bots, account takeovers (ATO), and DDoS attacks, filtering malicious automation without adding friction for genuine users.
The challenge: Brute force attacks and price scraping
According to Vincent Salard, CIO of Ubaldi.com, the company was facing two major issues: automated credential stuffing on their login endpoint and large-scale scraping of prices and product data.
“Ill-intentioned people were testing email addresses and password libraries by launching brute force attacks on our website, looking for valid combinations that they could then sell,” Vincent explains.
Beyond the brand and data exposure risks, the automated scraping abuse consumed significant server resources and drove up cloud costs during peak activity.
“At one point, roughly half of our traffic was generated by bots,” Vincent says. “We were facing scraping issues, data loss, and even copies of our website. Operators were stealing our information, especially pricing, to gain a competitive advantage.”
“For a retail and online company, it’s mandatory to control your traffic (know exactly what happens and how it’s composed) and to control how your cloud resources are consumed. Resources are scalable, but expensive,” Vincent says.
The solution: Accurate bot defense that doesn’t disrupt UX
One of the main criteria when searching for a solution was the capacity to accurately distinguish good intent from malicious intent. The team looked for server-side detection to classify traffic in real time, and for protection that could continuously adapt to evolving scraping and attack patterns. They were also particularly concerned about false positives and preserving the user experience.
“It’s a real issue,” Vincent acknowledges. “Solving a CAPTCHA creates friction in the purchase process, and we feel that it takes away from the shopping experience.”
After identifying two vendors, getting feedback from former colleagues, and testing both solutions, Ubaldi.com chose DataDome.
“We selected DataDome for its technical solution, which met our needs better. Plus, the company provided excellent support, the team was always available and fully invested,” Vincent says.
The results: Time & cost savings with zero added friction
Now, credential stuffing is immediately detected and neutralized, and scraper bots can no longer access the data they seek.
“The main benefit is knowing that the site is better protected now. The attacks aren’t even visible anymore in terms of our servers, which means they’re being filtered out,” says Vincent. “Detecting bots will always be a cat-and-mouse game, but now we have specialists who handle the job for us. We don’t have to worry about it anymore.”
As automated abuse has evolved—from CAPTCHA‑farm attempts to LLM scraping and agentic traffic—the protection kept pace without introducing friction, reinforcing the team’s confidence in day‑to‑day operations.
Besides blocking bad bots, DataDome also provides an excellent view of the platform’s overall traffic.
“It’s a valuable advantage that we weren’t really expecting when we first started looking at the solution,” says Vincent. “The dashboard reports tell us exactly where all our traffic is coming from, which has improved our ability to adjust how we treat it.”
The operational ROI is also clear to the CIO. “At the worst moments, we were spending about an hour a day on scraping and resource issues. DataDome removed this problem,” Vincent says.
Filtering unwanted automation also reduces cloud resource consumption, improving performance and ensuring capacity remains available for legitimate visitors. “When a primetime TV show features your brand, it’s reassuring to know unwanted traffic won’t reduce your capacity to handle the surge of curious visitors.”
